What is B12?

To put it simply, vitamin B12 (also known as cobalamin) is a water-soluble vitamin that plays a pivotal role in your body’s overall health. Synthesized by micro-organisms, animals are able to obtain B12 either by bacteria that is already produced within their bodies or by eating foods that contain bacteria. Unfortunately for humans, we are unable to get the vitamin B12 that is produced in the colon because it can only be absorbed in our small intestine.

B12 is mostly found in food sources including meat, eggs, poultry, fish, and dairy products, which, obviously, becomes a concern for those who strictly follow a plant-based diet and makes them more prone for B12 deficiency, which presents serious health risks that we will cover later on in this post. In fact, in one study it was found B12 deficiency affected up to 86 percent of all vegans.

The Importance of B12

If you are a vegan or a vegetarian, it is very likely that one reason that you decided to live the lifestyle is for the plethora of health benefits that come with eating only plant-based food sources. However, you need to make sure that your body is getting B12 vitamins as well! A few of the many health benefits that come with this vitamin include:

  • Protection of your nervous system

  • The formation of red blood cells

  • Building DNA

  • Boost in energy

  • Digestion

  • And so much more

B12 Deficiency in Vegans and Vegetarians

As we stated before, a large margin of vegetarians and vegans (especially those that follow a strict diet) suffer from vitamin B12 deficiency. This is not something to ignore, for it can lead to very serious health concerns such as anemia, changes in your neurocognitive functions, nerve damage, and, if action is not taken, is found to cause paralysis. Clearly, these health risks are not to be taken lightly.

If you are pregnant or elderly, getting the right amount of B12 in your body becomes even more important. B12 is necessary for the growth and healthy development of a baby. And for the elderly, vitamin deficiency occurs much more frequently so it is essential to stay alert and attentive to your vitamin intake in these conditions.
